Pike Research Says Battery Electric Vehicles Lowest TCO for Alt-fuel Vehicles

Assuming that the operator is able to claim the $7,500 federal tax credit, a Pike Research study on the total cost of ownership of alternative-fuel vehicles shows that 'mid-size hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery electric will have a lower TCO over a vehicle lifespan of 120,000 miles, but not at mileage levels that are well under that figure.'

For a typical fleet vehicle that drives 45 miles per day, the combined mode fuel economy would be more than 30 mpg, while a similar Ford E-350 cutaway chassis with a V8 engine is only able to achieve less than 9 mpg, based on data provided by major fleets.

2013 GMC and Chevrolet Bi-Fuel Pickups Unveiled

<p>The 2013 bi-fuel Chevrolet Silverado includes a compressed natural gas (CNG) capable engine that transitions between CNG and gas fuel systems. The bi-fuel Silverado will be covered by General Motors' extensive warranty, and will meet all EPA and CARB emission certification requirements.</p>

The bi-fuel commercial trucks can transition between CNG and gas fuel systems, making for a range of more than 650 miles. Both vehicles meet all Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board emission certification requirements.
