GM To Use OnStar for Recall Announcements

Beginning this month, General Motors Corp. will begin notifying GM vehicle owners of recalls, not through the mail, but with its OnStar in-vehicle communications device, The Detroit News reported.If owners have not brought their vehicles in for repairs within 60 days of the initial notice, then GM will contact owners through the onboard system. GM’s goal is to increase recall completion rates, which have ranged from 50 percent to 98 percent in recent years.OnStar subscribers can push the blue button and learn specifics of the recall after being connected to GM customer assistance officials, the report said. Subscribers can also push the button during non-emergency service calls to find out about recalls and be connected with a dealer to schedule repairs.GM is looking to have OnStar – a subsidiary launched in 1996 - on all of its 2007 models.
