Vehicle modifier Crazy Diamond Performance has received certification from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to produce compressed natural gas versions of the Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Sonic compact sedans.

The two dedicated-CNG vehicles will be the first of a possible series of small, fuel efficient vehicles from the Michigan company.

Crazy Diamond plans to begin selling the 1.8-liter and 1.4-liter Cruze and Sonic CNG fuel systems in the summer of 2015, according to Michelle Fern, Crazy Diamond's executive vice president.

These vehicles are geared toward fleets looking to purchase a domestic, small single-fuel passenger sedan, the company says. The new vehicles emit 25 percent less carbon dioxide than the gasoline versions of the vehicles.

Crazy Diamond Performance has initially hoped to begin selling the vehicles this fall.
