U.S. DOT Issues New Plan and $2.4M in Funding to Prevent Distracted Driving

The 'Blueprint for Ending Distracted Driving' plan encourages the remaining 11 states without distracted driving laws to enact and enforce this type of legislation. It also asks the auto industry to adopt new guidelines for technology to reduce the potential for distraction on devices built into, or brought into, vehicles.

Alabama Bans Texting While Driving

The new law, which takes effect Aug. 1, makes Alabama the 38th state to outlaw the practice of texting while driving.

Company Cell Phone Policies Increased by 31% in 9 Months, Survey Finds

In a ZoomSafer survey, not only are more commercial fleet operators implementing on-the-job cell phone policies for their drivers, but more are enforcing established policies too. Part of the increase is likely due to the FMCSA’s recent ban on cell phone use while driving for commercial drivers.

HERNDON, VA -- A new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) rule went into effect Jan. 3 that prohibits an estimated 4 million interstate commercial truck and bus drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. To help commercial fleet operators conform to the new regulation, software provider ZoomSafer has released “FMCSA Cell Phone Use Regulations: A Guide to Compliance for Truck and Bus Fleets.”

CAMP HILL, PA – Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett on Nov. 9 signed legislation that bans texting while driving on Pennsylvania roads. The new law, which makes texting while driving a primary offense carrying a $50 fine, takes effect in 120 calendar days.
