The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced a five-year extension of its cooperative agreement with the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS) to research advanced alcohol detection technology

NHTSA is an agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety is a nonprofit organization funded by BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Porsche, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.

Under the partnership, NHTSA is working with ACTS to develop a Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety (DADSS) that's noninvasive and poses no inconvenience to sober drivers. The goal is to create a system that can accurately and reliably detect when a driver is above the legal alcohol limit of 0.08 BAC. The automatic system would be enabled whenever the vehicle is started.

"In this age of innovation, smart technology may be the breakthrough we need to prevent drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel and endangering the safety of others on our roads," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "The DADSS Research Program has shown significant promise to date, offering real potential in the future to prevent several thousand deaths annually."

In 2012, deaths in crashes involving drunk drivers increased 4.6 percent, taking 10,322 lives compared to 9,865 in 2011.

The DADSS program was authorized under The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21) Act. During the first year of the extended agreement, NHTSA and ACTS are contributing a combined total of $6,539,400 to help advance long-term research into DADSS.

Over the next few years, ACTS and NHTSA will explore the feasibility, potential benefits and challenges associated with widespread voluntary use of DADSS. They will also begin working to resolve any public policy or consumer acceptance issues that might impede adoption once the technology is commercially available.

By early 2015, a research vehicle that incorporates two different technological approaches to measuring BAC -- touch-based and breath-based -- will be available for testing in a pilot field trial. Research using laboratory-scale prototype detection devices is already underway, while testing with on-road prototype devices is expected within the next few years. The research vehicle will incorporate technologies developed by Takata-TruTouch Technologies and Autoliv Development AB. As the video below shows, advanced alcohol detection technology trials have already demonstrated applications for vehicle fleets.

Although these projects are very successful in terms of deterring driving under influence, they were unable to hinder it completely. In these projects usually an alcohol-meter connected to an immobilizer device is connected to the vehicle. The driver would need to take a blood alcohol test in order to run the vehicle. In certain intervals the driver would need to re-take the test to make sure that he did not take any alcohol. I have a few questions regarding this system:1.      Are you sure that the driver is the one to take the alcohol test?2.      If there’s more than one person in the car, how do you prevent someone else from taking the alcohol test?3.      Why should a driver go through an alcohol test every time he wants to drive even if he never drinks alcohol?4.      What can be done when there’s a change of drivers within the day, i.e. between the alcohol test periods?5.      Why should a non-drinking driver go through regular alcohol tests once he started driving?6.      If the driver is not under influence but there are people in the car that drank alcohol –or is drinking, would the system prevent the car from running/stop the car?7.      Is the device sensitive for things like alcohol and deodorants that contain alcohol8.      Why should someone who never used / will use alcohol go through these tests?9.      Why should someone who drinks responsibly (never drinks and drives) go through these tests?10.  In an example family, 2 drinks alcohol, 1 is a passive drinker and the other 2 does not use alcohol. What is the precision of the device towards this family . 11. Can a driver under influence pass the test wearing transparent gloves or other materials ? What can be done about this ?In my project, a speed sensor, a voltage sensor, a time sensor, an alcohol-meter, MQ3  alcohol odor sensor and a facial recognition algorithm has been  used in an automation schema.According to this schema:1. End drunk driving  and driving without a permit. % 100 . Yok will not be  able to run the car  under influence or without a drivers license whatever you do.2.Because the device will check for the drivers license, any fines will be for the drivers and not the owner of the car .

    Although drunk driving is forbidden all over the world, still drunk driving cases exist. A lot of accidents occur due to the drunk driving. In such accidents many people injured or became disabled and unfortunately there are cases resulting death. Furthermore, millions of dollars financial damage occurs. To prevent such accident some institutions and companies construct projects or support such projects.
    In the projects, those have the aim of preventing such accidents from occurring, a connection is established between the engine and alcohol meter via an immobilizer system. The working principle of this kind of project is established as follows: while the driver indents to start the vehicle he must pass an alcohol test. To prevent the case of driver uses alcohol after starting the vehicle, the driver asked to pass alcohol tests every time that is designated by the system. This way it is tired to avoid driver to take alcohol after starting the vehicle.
    The name of this project is GOST “safe car driving technology”

    GOST project is established by utilizing speed sensor, voltage sensor, time sensor, alcohol meter, MQ3 alcohol scent sensor and face recognition algorithm. The process schema of face recognition algorithm is organized in accordance with the project and by utilization of the features of sensors mentioned above, new software is established.

    A. Drunk driving can be avoided by 100%

    B. Driving without a driving license can certainly be prevented

    C. Considering real time traffic tickets, the ticket is issued to the driver who is driving at that moment.

    D. Wherever in the world the vehicle is started, the personal information of the person who drives the vehicle can be reached.

    With this project, even a running vehicle can be prevented from operating.
    Similar technologies are embodied vehicle as a “must have device” in many Europe countries. Specially in school services, bus companies, cargo and logistic companies and lately in private vehicles it is embodied as a “must have device”
    The companies those are aware of the importance of their business or expecting to provide better service, to demonstrate that they can provide safer service compare to other companies, and considering security of life and property, want to utilize this device.


    1. Do you know, for certain, the one passes the alcohol test is the driver himself?
    2. How can you prevent a person to pass the alcohol test besides from the driver if there is more than one person in the vehicle?
    3. If the driver is a non-drinker or not drunk, why does he have to pass alcohols test every time he wants to use his vehicle or after starting his vehicle?
    4. What can be done in case of driver chance during the day or driver changes in “stop and go” cases?
    5. If the driver is not drunk, why should the case of “having another person in the car who is drinking alcohol or drunk” result in immobilization or preventing from starting vehicle?
    6. Is the device in the vehicle sensitive to alcohol components?
    7. Why should a conscious alcohol user pass an alcohol test when he uses a vehicle?
    8. A driver can pass alcohol test by wearing transparent gloves. What can be done in that case? GOST project is designed considering such circumstances and the driver is under control from starting the vehicle to stopping it.
    9. What are the other superiorities of GOST project? You can’t drive a vehicle without having a driver licence even the vehicle has started. The owner of the vehicle or other persons want to drive the vehicle should register their licence for once only. Later it is sufficient to have the licence with them when they want to use the vehicle.
    10. The stopping conditions of running vehicle are defined.
    11. Some countries expect zero tolerance while in some countries it is permitted to 0,8 promile.

    By making a concidetially protochol I can share detail informations. I am confident with myself do you want to invest . I am looking for a profit sharer. We can talked about details via translator.
    if you want to be a partner first I need to make a prototype. I do not have financial opportinuties. I can prove that this projec can be done to investors but a confidentialty prothocol must be done. Software scheme of this project is ready. I am looking for an investor to negotiate. I can prove this project can be done in presence of an engineer.
