Daimler Vans USA is recalling 40,061 2007-2008 model-year Freightliner Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans, as well as Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans, as part of the expanded Takata air bag inflator recall.

The vans were all manufactured from July 1, 2005, to July 31, 2008. They need new passenger-side frontal air bags because the existing ones have defective inflators that can rupture, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

If a crash triggers air bag deployment in one of these vans, the air bag inflator might explode and disperse metal fragments that can injure van occupants. The risk of inflator rupture has been linked to moisture seeping into the air bag over time, NHTSA said.

Daimler Vans USA will notify the Freightliner van owners, and FCA US (Fiat Chrysler) will notify the Dodge van owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge.

Freightliner van owners can reach DVUSA customer service at (877) 762-8267. Dodge van owners can call Fiat Chrysler customer service at (800) 853-1403.
