The 2013-MY Mazda CX-5

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the new 2013-MY Mazda CX-5 a Top Safety Pick. The automaker’s all-new small SUV earned the Institute's top award for good performance in front, side, rollover and rear impact evaluations.

According to IIHS, the CX-5 is the second Mazda vehicle to qualify for this award since the IIHS strengthened its criteria in 2010, requiring good performance in a roof strength test that assesses rollover protection. The Mazda3 is the other vehicle that earned this distinction.

In the roof test, the IIHS said it compares the maximum force sustained by the roof, before 5 inches of crush, with the vehicle's weight to find the strength-to-weight ratio. The organization said the roof of the CX-5 withstood a force equal to 5.47 times the vehicle's weight. Vehicles with a strength-to-weight ratio of 4 or better earn a good rating.
