Popular Mechanics magazine awarded a "Breakthrough Award" to Ford Motor Co. for the automaker’s new 1.0L three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. The publication selects 10 key technology applications each year to receive this honor.

The 1.0L engine is on sale in a number of European vehicles, including the Focus, C-MAX, and B-MAX models, and the automaker plans to offer this engine in upcoming vehicles in North America in the future.

According to Ford, the engine uses turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing to deliver performance while reducing fuel consumption. The engine is capable of delivering 125 hp, Ford stated.
