Consumer Reports has named the 2014 Ram 1500 a "top pick" in its 2014 Autos Spotlight released Tuesday.

The publication called the Ram 1500 "surprisingly refined and inviting" and said its coil-spring rear suspension "makes it the most comfortable-riding truck." The publication evaluated a Ram equipped with a 5.7L V-8 engine that returned a combined 15 miles per gallon in testing. The pickup is also offered with a 3.0L V-6 diesel engine that gets an EPA-rated 28 mpg highway. The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel began shipping to dealers on Wednesday, Chrysler announced.

General Motors' redesigned 2014 Silverado also scored high in testing with the caveat that "its reliability is unknown" because it's such a new vehicle.

The publication chose top picks in 10 categories, including naming the Tesla Model S as the best overall vehicle of 2014.

Other top picks went to the Subaru Forester for small SUV, Honda Accord for mid-sized sedan, Subaru Impreza for compact car, Hyundai Santa Fe for mid-sized SUV, Toyota Prius for green car, Audi A6 for luxury car, BMW 328i for sports sedan, and Honda Odyssey for minivan.
