Toyota Recalling Highlanders to Fix Seat Belt Software

Toyota is recalling 50,000 2014 model-year Highlander and Highlander Hybrid SUVs because they might have faulty software that could compromise front-seat passenger protection during a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

The software in question, installed in the air bag electronic control unit, controls operation of the front passenger seat belt force limiter. Because of a software glitch, the force limiter may mistakenly use a restraint setting geared for a passenger who is smaller than the one seated in the vehicle. As a result, the front-seat passenger may not be properly restrained during a collision.   

To remedy the problem, Toyota dealers will install a software update in the air bag electronic control unit. There will be no charge for this service.

The recall is expected to begin in mid-June. Vehicle owners can reach Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
