DaimlerChrysler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit says it has become the first automaker to offer factory-installed Internet capability in cars in the United States, with service available on many 2001 models in showrooms now.

The Mercedes system delivers limited news, sports, weather, and stock information from the Internet to a screen in the car's dashboard. Nearly all the major automakers are working on systems to deliver Internet and other services to cars, hoping to tap into subscription revenue from what would otherwise be one-time customers.
