July 20, 2001

A House Committe passed a bill on July 19 that would reduce gasoline consumption by SUVs and minivans by 5 billion gallons over a six-year period beginning in 2004.The regulation is part of an overall bill, approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee, that promotes nuclear energy, hydroelectric power, clean burning coal, renewable fuels and steady gasoline supplies. On Wednesday, the committe rejected a much stronger fuel standard that would have boosted the mileage requirements for passenger cars, SUVs and other lights trucks by 50%.--Reuters
