Chrysler Group announced that it will
sponsor the first-ever Motor City Cruisin’ event, an urban car stroll
through Detroit and its historical neighborhoods. Motor City Cruising,
which also includes a weekend filled with various festivities, will be held
from July 19 - 20, 2003, at Historic Fort Wayne, located at West Jefferson
and Livernois, in Southwest Detroit.
"Chrysler Group has a tradition of making a difference in the communities
in which we do business," said Frank Fountain, Chrysler Group’s senior vice
president for Government Affairs. “As a member of the community, Chrysler
Group is pleased that it can support the development of new art and
entertainment programs. These programs showcase the automobile and provide
benefits to the citizens of Detroit.”
On Saturday, Motor City Cruisin’ festivities include the Cruisin’ the “D”
Road Rally, which is similar to the popular Woodward Dream Cruise, except
that vehicles drive through Detroit villages and not the suburbs. The route
will begin and end at Historic Fort Wayne, and pass through Mexican Town,
Corktown, Palmer Woods, Indian Village and the historic Boston/Edison
District.
Personalities such as actress Suzanne Douglass of “The Parenthood,” actress
Shari Headley of “Coming to America,” former Detroit Pistons player Rick
Mahorn, Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, and Motor City legendary
boxing trainer Emmanuel Steward are expected to participate in the Cruisin’
the “D” Road Rally.
“Motor City Cruisin’ was created to showcase areas of the city of Detroit,
and to give Detroiters the venue to demonstrate our appreciation for the
automobile,” said Alan Miller, founder of Motor City Cruisin’ and president
of the A. Miller Group, a local marketing and consulting company that
focuses on diversity initiatives.
Other entertainment will include a performance by Luther “Badman” Keith
Blues and a concert featuring Dawnn Lewis from “A Different World.”
Sunday’s activities include health screenings and a community wedding, both
at Historic Fort Wayne. Free blood-pressure screenings will be conducted,
and couples who desire to be married at the first Motor City Cruisin’ can
exchange vows from 2 p.m. -- 4 p.m. at “My Motor City Cruisin’ Wedding.
