SUVs Are Most Popular Target For Thieves

August 21, 2003

According to the Detroit Press, thieves broke into Don Massey Cadillac in Lone Tree, Colo., last November and stole seven Escalade sport-utility vehicles. The $55,000 SUV is the vehicle most likely to be targeted by thieves, according to a report released by a research group funded by auto insurers. The report, which reviewed theft claims for 2000-02 model-year vehicles, found that five of the top 10 vehicles stolen or broken into are SUVs.The Dodge Stratus, ranked second on the list, was the four-door car most likely to be targeted, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The organization compared insurance claims with the overall number of insured vehicles to get a percentage of likelihood that a vehicle will be targeted. The Escalade averaged 10.3 claims per 1,000 insured vehicles, and the Dodge Stratus, 8.7 claims. The average number of claims for all vehicles was 2.6.
