DaimlerChrylser AG plans to sell or lease 64 fuel cell vehicles by year end, the Dow Jones news service reported last week. DCX will lease four fuel cell A class F-Cell Mercedes Benz models to a German telecom company and a European utility company. The manufacturer has already sold several fuel cell-powered buses, and has orders in place for Perth, Australia and Beijing, Thomas Weber, DaimlerChrysler board member in charge of research and technology, told the news service. Weber said mass production of the vehicles is 10 years away since the cost is ten times higher than production of gasoline-powered vehicles. In 2003 DaimlerChrysler spent $2.18 billion on environmental research and development.
