Chrysler Recalls 681,000 Minivans

August 5, 2004

DaimlerChrysler’s Chrysler division recalled 681,000 of its 2002 through 2004 minivans because a power-steering hose can leak and cause a fire, wire services reported Thursday. The recall includes Dodge and Chrysler minivans with V-6 engines built before August 2003. The automaker said it received six reports of fluid leaks and fires in the U.S. and 17 in Canada, primarily in cold climates. Chrysler recalled about 199,000 more of the minivans outside the U.S., including 150,000 in Canada, spokesman Max Gates told news services. No injuries have resulted, Chrysler said. Wear on the hose showed up first in cold climates, when fluid surged through as the vans were started, Gates said. The recall is across the U.S. as well as in Mexico and overseas because ``we can't assume the condition will be confined to cold climates,'' he said.Chrysler also recalled Thursday about 2,000 of its 2004-model Dodge Ram pickups because an alternator wire may be damaged. The recall affects vehicles with 4.7-liter engines.
