TACOMA, Wash. — The 40,000 Washington truck drivers who are licensed to haul explosives and poisonous chemicals soon must be fingerprinted and undergo background checks, the Associated Press reports. The AP story states that drivers who want a hazardous materials endorsement will probably have to pay the estimated $100 cost of the background checks themselves. The Transportation Security Administration says it's the same screening against criminals and terrorists required of airport workers. The TSA is in the process of hiring a company to collect the fingerprints in Washington and other states for the FBI. The program would begin at the end of January. The Washington Trucking Association is supportive of the move, the AP report says.
