After studies pointed to driver-related factors as a primary cause for the majority of crashes involving large trucks, the American Transportation Research Institute decided to look into driver behavior in an effort to reduce the number of accidents. The ATRI looked at specific traffic violations, traffic conviction information and previous involvement in traffic accidents. Over a three-year period, results included predictive data on 540,750 drivers. Those drivers with violations of reckless driving and improper turns had the greatest possibility of involvement in a future crash. The four convictions, on the other hand, that most likely forecast an accident are improper lane change, failure to yield at a right of way, improper turn, and failure to maintain proper lane. With one of these convictions, a driver’s likelihood of a crash increases between 91 percent and 100 percent.
