A new in-car device being road-tested by Transport Canada prevents a car from speeding, according to CTV.ca. The device uses global positioning satellite technology and a digital speed-limit map. When users reach a certain speed limit, the device makes it difficult to press down on the accelerator. Researchers are assessing how well drivers accept the device. Proponents are enthusiastic about the potential to reduce deaths and injuries from car crashes, as well as reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, which are greater at higher speeds, the CTV.ca story reports. By spring, researchers will determine by spring whether drivers actually changed speeding habits. If so, a larger trial will be implemented. Another similar device only warns drivers with a voice alarm and a light if they start speeding. Similar devices have already been tested in Sweden, the Netherlands and Britain, and may lead to insurance companies offering discounts to drivers who use it.
