Jersey Shutdown Hurts Limo Business

July 5, 2006

New Jersey's budget deadlock, and the resulting shutdown of its government and casinos, is also negatively affecting business for companies in New York that provide transportation to Atlantic City, according to The Associated Press. The first mass closure of New Jersey’s 12 casinos in Atlantic City’s 28-year history of legalized gambling occurred June 28, the fifth day of the budget stalemate. Many limo operators, such as Stan’s Limousine Service out of Long Island, report heavy cancellations and losses of thousands of dollars per day. Some of the company’s dozen cars have been rerouted to the Foxwoods Resort Casino, in Mashantucket, Conn.Tri-Star Limo Company’s 75-car fleet had been totally booked, but is now available for other trips, says employee Jasmine Garner. The Party Ride, operating 15 luxury buses, says business has been slower than usual, but that some reservations are still coming in.At the other end of the economic spectrum, a reservations agent at the Greyhound bus line, which normally offers $31 round-trip service from New York to the Atlantic City casinos, told callers on Wednesday that the service was temporarily canceled.
