MAXAIR is a new smart system that detects when vehicle tires are under-inflated and automatically fills them to the correct pressure using air from an onboard compressor. Under-inflated tires reduce average gas mileage by 3.3 percent, the company reports, so by keeping tires at optimum pressure, MAXAIR saves gas and money. A reduction in fuel use also means the lowering of greenhouse gases, which are often blamed for contributing to global warming. Additionally, even slightly under-inflated tires can be dangerous–especially when roads are wet. An automobile parts manufacturer could supply MAXAIR to automakers for about $200 per vehicle.
