Toyota plans to offer two powertrains, a gasoline and a hybrid system, for its 2013-MY Avalon. The automaker said it will equip the gasoline version of the sedan with a 3.5L, DOHC V-6, matched with a six-speed automatic transmission, capable of producing 268 hp and 248 lb. ft. of torque.

Toyota said the new powertrain offers improved fuel economy, performance, superior shift feel and response, upgraded drivability and quietness, when compared with the previous edition.

The V-6 2013 Avalon achieves an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined (21 city/ 31 highway). The gasoline version of the Avalon offers three driving modes, Eco, Normal and Sport, which are designed to optimize driving characteristics depending on the driver’s preference (Eco focuses on fuel economy, Sport on performance and Normal is balanced).

For the Avalon Hybrid, the vehicle achieves an EPA-rated 40 mpg city and 39 mpg highway, for 40 mpg combined. The Avalon Hybrid features a 2.5L, Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine, a 244.8-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack and two electric motor/generators in the transaxle.

The Avalon Hybrid can achieve a total system output of 200 hp and offers three modes of operation: EV (i.e. electric motor only), Eco and Sport. A driver can engage the EV mode (provided other correct conditions) for up to one mile at speeds up to 25 mph.

Toyota said its 2013 Avalon was designed at its facilities in the U.S. in southern California and in Michigan. The vehicle will be assembled at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) facility in Georgetown, Ky.
