Sales of pickups and vans helped boost General Motors' June fleet sales, which increased 2 percent compared to a year ago.

GM delivered 267,461 vehicles in June to U.S. dealers and fleet buyers. The automaker increase retail sales by 1 percent over June of 2013. The automotive industry expects to sell more than 16 million vehicles this year.

GM has seen eight consecutive months of growth in its commercial vehicle business, and recorded the best June in the segment since 2007, the automaker announced. Commercial fleet sales rose 48 percent year-over-year.

Sales to government fleet buyers rose 14 percent n June compared to a year ago, a trend mostly attributed to strong sales of the Chevrolet Malibu. Small business deliveries rose 6 percent due to sales of vans, SUVs and pickups.

Rental sales fell 11 percent during the month, as the automaker continues to de-emphasize the segment.
