Chevrolet's 2016 Cruze compact car enters its second generation with a model that's 250 pounds lighter than the outgoing model and is expected to return 40 mpg highway, General Motors has announced.

The 2016 Cruze arrives with a new turbo 1.4-liter four cylinder providing 153 hp and paired with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The car gets standard stop-start technology. The Cruze should achieve 40 mpg highway with the automatic transmission.

Advanced safety features offered on the 2016 Cruze include Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist and Forward Collision Alert.

Other features include the MyLink infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability.

The 2016 Cruze will be available in early 2016. A diesel model will arrive in 2017.
