The new Smart Fortwo Electric Drive reduces charging time and will go on sale in the spring, Mercedes-Benz has announced.

The vehicle will arrive with a new on-board charger that enables a full charge on a 240-volt circuit in 2.5 hours, which is twice as fast as its predecessor. A full charge provides 99 miles of range based on European testing. U.S. range information will be released closer to launch.

Lithium-ion battery technology powers a 17.6-kWh battery pack and three-phase 80-hp electric motor. The vehicle reaches a top speed of 81 mph.

After electrifying its top-selling Fortwo, Smart plans to produce battery-electric versions of its entire lineup.
