Fleet FAQ? How to Start Improving Cell Phone Safety

Q. We have a policy in place, how do we enforce and make sure drivers are following it?

A. Technology is the key to truly enforcing a no-cell-phone policy. Drivers may say they are following policy, but without technology there is no way to really know. A great comparison is before telematics, fleet managers knew their drivers were idling their vehicles but couldn’t prove or enforce it. New safety technologies, allow you to know for certain that your policies are being followed.

When looking into cell phone safety solutions, look for ones that do the following:

  • Proactive – disables the cell phone screen as soon as the vehicle is in motion
  • Compatibility – Make sure the product operates with Android as well as iOS devices
  • Battery Life – find a solution that doesn’t drain your battery
  • Active coaching – audible alerts improve driver behavior and perception of risk

Fleets that are fully equipped with safety technology will change driver’s behavior in the context of the policy, creating a true safety culture.
