Ford Motor Co. said its Ford division set a new U.S. sales record for sport utility vehicles in 2001 for the fifth straight year, led by its top-selling Explorer. The second-largest automaker, which is battling larger rival General Motors Corp. for the U.S. lead in light trucks, said the division sold 760,090 sport-utilities through Dec. 19, breaking its previous record of 752,061 for all of 2000. Explorer sales will top 400,000 for the fourth consecutive year, according to Ford.
