UTC Fuel Cells, a unit of United Technologies Corp., has signed a landmark deal with Nissan Motor Co. to develop fuel-cell technology for future generations of automobiles. The deal, which has been under discussion for months, is a huge win for UTC and gives the South Windsor, Conn., company a voice alongside its biggest competitor, Ballard Power Systems Inc., in shaping how the technology will be used in the future. The agreement, which includes Nissan and its partner, Renault SA, is expected to be announced Feb. 19, according to a story by J. Lynn Lunsford in the Wall Street Journal. "This deal is significant because it is more than just selling hardware," said Dan Kelly, the company's vice president for transportation. "We are in it to prove the viability of the technology and that our system will perform better than those of our competitors."
