Volvo announced that its 2013-MY X60 is the first luxury SUV to earn an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ recognition level. To earn the new Top Safety Pick+ recognition, a vehicle must pass the IIHS’ new small front overlap crash test in addition to IIHS' existing group of tests.

As well, a vehicle must earn a rating of “good” for occupant protection in four out of five of IIHS’ tests and an “acceptable” rating in the fifth test in order to earn Top Safety Pick+.

The automaker said the 2013 Volvo X60 and S60 earned IIHS’ highest rating of “good” in the organization’s tests. The S60 was given the Top Safety Pick+ recognition in December.
