Acura set an all-time monthly record of 16,229 in May fueled by record sales of the MDX luxury SUV and continued demand for the 3.2 TL luxury performance sedan, according to sales figures released June 3 by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. May 2002 sales were up 11.3 percent from 2001, and beat the previous monthly sales record of 15,982 set in March of 2001. "These sales numbers signify the continued strength of the luxury vehicle market and American’s growing affinity for light trucks," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. "While the TL continues to be our best selling vehicle, demand for the MDX is growing tremendously and creates a nice one-two punch for Acura." According to the company, MDX sales of 5,633 were up 48 percent compared to last year, eclipsing the previous all-time monthly sales record of 5,083 set in March 2002. Year-to-date MDX sales climbed to 21,990, a 20.6 percent increase compared to last year. Sales of the 3.2 TL set a new May sales record of 5,825, up 3.9 percent from last year. The all-new RSX sports coupe continued to sell well with a May total of 2,995 pushing year-to-date sales to 13,195, according to Honda.
