Kia Motors Corp. is recalling 9,345 2014 model-year front wheel drive Sorento crossover vehicles because a manufacturing issue may result in a fracture in the right front axle shaft, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The recall covers Sorento vehicles equipped with a 2.4-liter engine. The vehicles were all manufactured Jan. 7 through March 12 of this year.

If the front axle shaft fractures, the wheels may lose power. Additionally, if the vehicle is parked without the parking brake applied, the car may roll away. Both conditions pose a safety risk, NHTSA said.

To remedy the problem, Kia dealers will replace the front axle shaft assembly, free of charge. The recall is expected to get under way in September.

Vehicle owners can reach Kia at 1-800-333-4542.
