General Motors said it is recalling 303,000 2014 model-year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks so dealers can reprogram the engine control module.

When the vehicle is idling in cold temperatures, the exhaust components can overheat and melt nearby plastic parts, posing a fire risk, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers full-size pickup trucks with 4.3-liter and 5.3-liter engines. Eight fires associated with the problem have been reported, but there have been no injuries.

The problem sometimes triggers “check engine” and “engine power reduced” warning messages. Drivers also may notice the truck running rougher than usual after starting the engine. Until the software fix is made, drivers should not let the trucks idle unattended, GM said.

The recall is due to get under way next week. But truck owners don’t need to wait until they receive recall notification in the mail to make an appointment at a dealership. There will be no charge for the repair service.
