Ford Motor Co. is recalling 3,973 2015 model-year F-250, F-350, F-450 and F-550 Super Duty trucks so dealers can correct an error in the transmission control software, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports.

The recall, due to begin early this month, affects trucks manufactured from Sept. 13, 2013, through March 28, 2014. They are each equipped with a 6.2L gasoline or 6.7L diesel engine and a 6R140 transmission.

When a driver shifts from "park" to "drive," the vehicle might engage "reverse" for 1.5 seconds before engaging "drive" – even though the gear selection shows “drive.” This can result in momentary, unexpected backward movement, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA said.

Ford dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. Truck owners can reach Ford at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14C04.
