Fleet FAQ? Telematics & Fleet Tracking

Q. I was telling an IT friend of mine about how we’re looking into adding telematics to my fleet, and he replied that we should consider using an “open-platform solution". What is that? Are there advantages to using an open platform?

A. In the context of telematics, an open-platform solution allows unfiltered, full access to all of the data generated from a vehicle. The benefit of an open platform is having the flexibility to customize or scale as your fleet changes and evolves. With an open platform, you have the ability to add third-party solutions to the telematics platform that will specifically improve your efficiency. Open platforms are what allow you to scale as you need, extract and integrate telematics data with other software or hardware solutions. With a closed platform, you don’t have that flexibility. Instead, you are only allowed access to the data specifically provided by the solution, likely without the ability to add third-party solutions that will meet your specific needs that allow choice and flexibility to the solutions you need and use to operate your business.
