A. First, never adopt a cookie-cutter safety program. What works for one fleet, may completely derail your efforts at promoting safety among your drivers. That being said, there are several elements that even the most customized programs share. Once you’ve determined the pain points you want to address — for example, high-risk drivers or the primary causes of crashes — you’ll need to outline the primary elements of the program. They can include, but aren’t limited to:
• A well-defined safety policy
• Consequences for violations
• Best remediation tactics
• Program implementation steps
• Metrics to identify the severity of a violation or risky behavior
• How success is defined
