After years of enjoying profits from sport utilities and pickup trucks -- and largely ignoring their traditional car lineups -- the Big Three automakers are getting serious about cars again, according to the Wall Street Journal. But they are taking radically different views on what flavor of car American consumers will want, the Journal said. Among the ideas on tap are some so old they're new again, including rear-wheel drive and vehicles that most consumers will identify as station wagons, even if the car makers avoid that term, according to the Journal. With Asian and European carmakers piling into the SUV and truck segments, Detroit is betting it will be easier to boost slim profits by cutting losses on cars than by trying to expand profits on trucks, the Journal reported.
