Solution To Provide a Digital Roadmap Database to Exploit the Powerful
Features of Oracle Spatial 10g
Navigation Technologies, a provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation, Internet/wireless,
government, and business solutions and an active member of the OraclePartner Network, on Sept. 17 announced that its NAVTECH Map Data provides a digital roadmap database to exploit the features of Oracle(R) Spatial 10g.
Oracle Spatial 10g includes powerful new features that perform geocoding and routing
in the database, according to the company. These features are central to applications such as logistics, supply chain, asset management, field service, call centers and many others that need to know the location of an address or need to provide directions from one address to another.
By including these features in the database, Oracle says it underscores its commitment to making location-based data an integral part of the infrastructure available to all enterprise applications.
As announced in October of 2001, NAVTECH Map Data has been available in the Oracle 8i format, Spatial Object Model. According to both Navigation Technologies and Oracle, the availability of NAVTECH Maps in a format compatible with Oracle's Spatial 10g "further confirms both companies' commitment to the partnership and to providing quality solutions to customers."
Both geocoding and routing depend on high quality geographic data representing street networks and addresses. "Navigation Technologies, a leading provider of geographic data and a long-standing Oracle ally, has
committed to providing its street network data in Oracle 10g-ready form for both geocoding and routing," the company said in a statement.
Users of Navigation Technologies' products will
be able to load the data directly into the Oracle Database 10g and begin to run their applications that require either geocoding or routing with no intermediate steps, saving time and money and reducing the complexity of
working with location based data, according to the companies.
"We believe routing and geocoding play a major role in dynamic location-based enterprise applications," said Robert Shimp, vice president of database marketing at Oracle.
"We tested NAVTECH map data and found it to be accurate and data-rich. This relationship reflects our commitment to high-quality, location-sensitive applications and grid computing."
To help Oracle Database 10g customers evaluate the data and the new technology, Navigation Technologies says it will offer sample data for San Francisco and Washington, D.C., on its Web site for downloading. Data for London and Paris
will be added in 2004.
Data can be downloaded free of charge by any licensed Oracle Database 10g user and loaded directly into the Oracle Database. Customers may license data for North America, Europe and many other countries around the world.
"NAVTECH maps are well suited for use with Oracle Spatial 10g," said John MacLeod, executive vice president, global marketing and strategy for Navigation Technologies. "This
alliance will enable enterprise customers to benefit from routing applications that meet their quality, time and cost objectives. Navigation Technologies is excited about extending its relationship with Oracle. We're pleased to make NAVTECH map data more readily available for Oracle's core geocoding and
