This winter is expected to be especially cold, according to the latest Farmers' Almanac. That means plenty of problems for your car if you're not prepared. Here are some expert tips from Quaker State to make sure you aren't stranded on the side of the road.
  • Keep your gas tank at least halfway full. If you let it go below half full, there's a lot of air in there. That means moisture can eventually settle and freeze up in your gas tank -- causing you to have problems.

  • Check your car battery's strength, especially if your battery is more than two years old.

  • Have a fast lube or professional check your battery strength to make sure it's going to be able to start your car on one of those mornings.

  • Use oils designed to protect and improve engine performance in extremely cold temperatures. These types of oils can prevent engine wear or failure from occurring.

  • Have the cooling system, both the fluid level and the strength of the coolant itself, checked.

  • Check the air pressure and tread depth of your tires for good traction in icy conditions.

  • Be prepared in case your car or truck breaks down in freezing temperatures. Have a first aid kit, flashlight, blanket, bottled water and necessary medicines in the trunk for use until help arrives.
