You know you pay too much in car insurance when your premium almost equals your payments over the same time frame. Earlier this year, edmunds.com released its lists for the top 10 least and most expensive 2004 vehicles to insure. The Chrysler PT Cruiser and GMC Safari topped the lists of least expensive cars and trucks to insure. The Mercedes-Benz CL Class and Land Rover Range Rover ranked number one on being the most expensive car and truck. Not surprisingly, sports and luxury cars have the highest insurance losses for vehicle damage while passenger vans and station wagons have the lowest insurance losses. The lists were based on five-year projections of the lowest insurance premiums using the Web site’s “True Cost to Own” pricing system, which calculates additional costs associated with buying, owning and operating the vehicle. Among the added expenses are depreciation, taxes and fees, fuel costs, maintenance and repairs. Progressive, a national automotive insurance company, released a similar list. The PT Cruiser also appeared on their list for least expensive vehicles, as did the Oldsmobile Silhouette and Pontiac Montana minivans. The Dodge Viper SRT-10 was ranked as the most expensive vehicle. Top 10 Least Expensive Cars to Insure for 2004 1. Chrysler PT Cruiser 2. Volkswagen Jetta 3. Saturn L300 4. Saab 9-5 5. Volvo V40 6.
