Los Angeles and Orange County, Calif. commuters can now use a mobile traffic device to view and avoid traffic congestion. TrafficGauge, a real-time mobile traffic map introduced this week, gives drivers an overview of the Los Angeles and Orange County freeway grids. The wireless device shows traffic slowdowns on a handheld display by receiving official data gathered by Caltrans from wire sensor loops under freeways. The information is then sent to Metro via the Regional Integration of Intelligent Transportation Systems (RITTS), and then to the community via the Web. The system covers over 850 freeway miles throughout Los Angeles and Orange counties, and updates traffic conditions as often as every four minutes. Seattle commuters were the first to use TrafficGauge. The company says Seattle commuters who used the device shaved 4.8 hours of commute time per month.
