The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has requested comments on whether to mandate the use of on-board recording devices to document compliance with the Federal hours-of-service rules for commercial drivers. The agency has permitted the voluntary use of such devices since the 1980s. Given technological advances, the FMCSA believes it may now be appropriate to require installation of such recording devices on most commercial vehicles.
