Ford Motor Co. announced this week it will recall nearly 600,000 Escape and Mazda Tribute SUVs because the accelerator cable may prevent the engine from returning to the idle position and may increase stopping distance. The small SUVs involved in the recall include 474,000 Escapes and 121,000 Mazda Tributes from the 2002-2004 model years. Ford owns one-third of Mazda Motor Corp. No injuries or accidents have been linked to the recall, a Ford spokesperson said. The Chrysler Group said late Friday it will recall about 600,000 Dodge Durango 4x4 sports utility vehicles and Dodge Dakota pickup trucks to replace front suspension upper ball joints. The recall covers vehicles made from the beginning of 2000 through the first half of 2003. The automaker said the joints may be subject to corrosion and progressive wear. If the problem is not corrected, the company said it could lead to front end noise, tire wear and, in extreme cases, separation of the front suspension. Chrysler said there have been no substantiated reports of injuries.
