Lawmakers in North Dakota have come to an agreement over provisions in a bill that would protect car owners from having “black box” information released without their consent. The bill, SB2200, introduced by Sen. Ray Holmberg, now goes to the State House of Representatives and Senate, according to a report in the Grand Forks Herald on April 7. The bill states that: • Insurance companies cannot force customers to release black box data by threatening to revoke their insurance policy. • For cars made in 2007 and after, the owner's manual must disclose the presence and capabilities of the black box. • The data collected by the black box belongs to the person who owned the vehicle when the data was collected. The bill allows customers to remove black box information before insurance companies take possession of the car, the Herald report said.
