A recent fleet management study confirms that Mecklenburg County, North Carolina needs to replace its aging vehicles, according to a story on www.news14.com on April 14. Of about 1,100 total vehicles, 477 are at least 10 years old and have more than 100,000 miles. Many sit idle because they need repairs, the report said. The study suggests that the county spend $4 million to replace aging vehicles. For the past several years, the county budget has been flat for most departments, including fleet management. But fleet management officials say they cannot wait much longer to buy replacements. Jim Cathey, the fleet management department’s assistant director, told News14 that the county is unnecessarily maintaining a pool of spare vehicles to support old and unreliable vehicles. Fleet management representatives will present their proposed budget to county leaders at the end of May, the report said.
