The head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said the agency would propose a rule in 2006 to electronically link a truck driver’s medical certificate to the state-issued commercial driver license, according to a June 27 report in Transport Topics. FMCSA also would establish a national registry of certified medical examiners by 2009, said Annette Sandberg, the agency’s administrator, during a public meeting last week. These examiners, including doctors, physicians’ assistants and chiropractors, would have to meet a series of qualifications in order to examine drivers, the report said.
