A factory Peugeot 307 HDi diesel hatchback recently traveled 1,877 miles in Australia on just over 29 gallons of fuel, averaging 76.3 mile per gallon, the New Zealand auto Web site www.car.co.nz reported. The car traveled at speeds between 50 mph and 68 mph, depending on posted speed limits. The Peugeot diesel hatchback, weighed down with luggage, frequently blasted the air conditioning and still only had to refill its 16 gallon tank only once, the report said. The car’s fuel economy is a result of an efficient high-pressure direct injection diesel motor that produces 240 Nm of torque at a low 1,750 rpm. The car’s power and high torque give it a strong performance while burning little fuel.
