A new safety feature being developed by Nissan Motor Co. to prevent possible collisions combines radar sensors and a computer system to judge a car’s speed and the distance to the vehicle in front, according to the Associated Press. If the car senses a possible head-on crash, the gas pedal will automatically rise against the driver’s foot as a signal to step on the brake. And, if the sensors detect a possible collision, the brake automatically kicks in when the driver lifts his or her foot off the gas. According the report, Nissan feels that the new technology will be useful because research has shown that more than half of traffic accidents are caused by inattention, drowsiness and carelessness, rather than error in judgment. The technology, which Nissan hopes to offer in Japan in about two to three years and eventually in the United States and Europe, is part of the company’s larger effort to create the accident-proof car.
