Seven 2006 model SUVs, including the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Mercedes Benz ML-class and Nissan Murano, earned the government’s highest ratings in providing protection in front-end and side crashes, according to the Associated Press. The findings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) new crash test and rollover ratings for 44 sedans, SUVs, pickups and vans. The Subaru B9 Tribeca, Hyundai Tucson and the 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac SUVs all earned five star side- and front-impact ratings as well, however, none of the SUVs or pickups tested received five stars in rollover testing. In front-end tests, five starts equals a 10 percent or less chance of serious injury and four stars estimates an 11 percent to 20 percent chance of serious injury. Frontal tests are conducted at 35 mph. Other vehicles from the 2006 model year earning five stars in both seating positions for frontal crashes include: Chevrolet Monte Carlo, Honda Civic, Buick Lucerne, Lexus ES330, Dodge Caravan and Kia Sedona.
