An electrical engineer for Cisco Systems Inc. beat out thousands of entries to be named the winner of the “America’s Longest Commute” contest sponsored by Midas Inc. Dave Givens of Mariposa, Calif., who drives 186 miles one way to get to work, won $10,000 in gas money as well as a variety of Midas maintenance services and products. Givens makes the 372 mile, seven hour round-trip five days a week. The second and third place winners, who drive one-way 175 and 164.4 miles respectively, won a “Care Package for a Long Commute,” from Midas. The contest was held in honor of Midas’ 50th anniversary. Participants were asked to report the mileage of their current daily commute, defined as the most direct route, one way, in miles, from their principal place of residence to their principal place of lawful employment. To be considered, participants had to currently drive a minimum of four days a week, each week of the month, and have driven for a minimum of three months.
