Ten states are filing a suit to force the Bush administration to toughen mileage regulations for SUVs and other trucks, according to a New York Times report. The suit contends that the administration did not do an intensive enough analysis of the environmental benefits of fuel economy regulations, which is required by law, before issuing new SUV, light truck and minivan fuel economy standards last month. The suit also contends the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration failed to conduct a thorough analysis of the environmental benefits of fuel economy regulations and the impact of gasoline consumption on global warming. The suit is the first of its kind to take aim at federal fuel economy standards, although there have been several suits initiated over its environmental policies. California will be the lead plaintiff in the suit, which also includes New York City, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and the District of Columbia. Some of these same states have team up in other environmental suits against the administration with mixed results, according to The Times.
